For many people, the mention of the term ‘stainless steel’ will inevitably bring to mind images of pipes and sheets of stainless steel. However, products made of stainless steel come into use in a myriad of ways. In kitchens, many people will use utensils and cutlery made of stainless steel. In homes and offices, the use of stainless steel furniture has become quite popular. In many cases, the facades and frames of various residential and commercial structures will feature stainless steel as well. Staircases, balustrades and railings made of stainless steel are quite common too. But, not many people possess much knowledge about the material used for making all these items that touch our lives in different ways i.e. stainless steel.

For the uninitiated, stainless steel is a low-carbon steel that contains a high percentage of chromium. The addition of chromium makes the steel alloy non-corrosive and stainless. The chromium content added serves to act as a barrier that coats the steel and prevents it from rusting or corroding. In the premium grades of stainless steel, the chromium coating features self-healing properties too. As such, in case the coating sustains chemical or mechanical damage, it can re-seal the protective barrier around the steel. This is why stainless steel objects usually offer high levels of durability

Stainless steel also possesses various other characteristics. It is:

 Resistant to Heat and Fire: Some grades of stainless steel are heat and fire-resistant. Thus, even when exposed to extremely high temperatures, the object will continue to retain its strength and structure.
 Resistant to Corrosion: Unlike iron or standard steel, stainless steel will not rust, stain or corrode. In fact, premium grades of stainless steel can resist corrosion in acidic and alkaline solutions as well.
 Strong and Light: Stainless steel is extremely strong. But, it is lightweight too, when compared to other materials such as iron. As such, from a weight perspective, builders will not require as much steel to provide the solidity needed in the structure.
 Easy to Clean: In certain industries, hygiene is very important. This is especially so in the food service and healthcare sectors. Stainless steel is easy to clean. This property makes it suitable for use in these sectors.
 Environment-Friendly: Stainless steel is entirely recyclable. So, you can melt it down and re-use it several times in your steel doors and windows. Unlike other materials, recycled steel will neither lose its strength or quality.
