Some decades ago, homeowners did not have a variety of options when it came to windows. As such, they usually had to make do with the few options available. Or, they invariably opted for replicating the windows that other houses in the neighbourhood featured. Today, this is no longer the case. In contemporary times, people have become more aware of the importance of having homes that are attractive and functional. The right windows play an important role in accomplishing this.

Some of the most common types of windows seen in properties across Australia include:

  • Arched Windows: These exude a timeless appeal in modern homes. These windows create a unique look by opening up the space. Fixed arch windows let in a lot of light. But, they do not offer ventilation.
  • Awning Windows: Many windows in homes these days come with sliding mechanisms. However, awning windows swing open rather than slide. They open with a top hinge that enables them to keep water out even when they are in use. These windows offer higher levels of insulation too.
  • Bay Windows: These windows open up your space and add architectural detail to it. They capture more light as well. The view from a bay window can make it a worthwhile investment.
  • Double Hung Windows: These windows can effectively ventilate a single room or an entire house. This is because you can open the top of the window to let the hot air escape. At the same time, you can open the bottom window as well to facilitate the entry of cool air.
  • Garden Windows: This denotes a box made from windows that protrude from the side of the house. The windows typically come together to create a box with a bottom shelf. You could use the shelf for holding plants or other personal items.
  • Picture Windows: These refer to large windows with single panes of glass that do not have any lines splitting or breaking them. These windows offer a nice and clear view. They are ideal for insulation purposes too.
  • Single Hung Windows: These denote sash type windows, which usually open vertically. Unlike awning windows, these windows do not jut out. So, you could install them along patios or on decks.
  • Skylight Windows: Operable skylights can create an exquisite and enchanting look in a house. These windows are among the least common windows used in homes nowadays. As such, you could use them to provide a unique look. They bring sunlight in through the roof of the house. In addition, they facilitate the escape of heat during the warmer months of the year.
